Sydney Bistro meets South Coast Cafe Friday night, rain pouring over the bay. Arriving at Seagrass, I was drawn in by the warm lighting, clean white tablecloths and comfortable chocolate brown banquettes lining the walls. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the host, Nathan Fay, whose incredible smile was more inviting than the tantalising aromas emanating from the small, practical kitchen (headed by ex-Bennelong chef Kierrin McKnight). Sitting down by the beautiful windows, we are presented with both menus and a wine list - both short yet well crafted. Whilst most of my companions opted for the entree special of wok-seared squid, followed by Yamba Prawn Linguine or the Herb Crusted Barramundi with Chips, I chose two entrees - Sardines with Skordalia and Tomato Concasse, followed by the (recommended) Pork & Fennel sausages with red onion relish. The food arrived promtly, yet the squid entree was huge and, whilst delicious, defeated my friends before they had even reached their mains. My Sardines were filleted, so lost much of their saltiness in cooking, and paired with the soft skordalia, the dish lacked distinction in flavour and texture. My Pork & fennel Sausages were much better - the aniseed complimented by the sweetness of the caramelised red onions. The mains received great compliments, but were not finished by anyone, as the portion sizes were again very large.
The service was flawless, with our host keeping the wine and water flowing. We were all disappointed when we could not have dessert (given how full we were), but the coffee was excellent. I had a brief chat with Nathan Fay, who described the decision to move to the South Coast from Sydney as 'a lifestyle choice'. So, whilst I was tired from my journey that day, the service, food, ambience and company made it incredibly difficult to draw myslef away. [24 Nov 2003 07:07:44]

pick of the bunch Food was delicious, but very big. Ambience was sensational as was the service. Toilets were the cleanest I have ever been in. Definately doing the right thing. I was very happily surprised and think the area needs a restaurant like this. [19 Mar 2004 01:36:35]
