Hidden inside the Wing Takanawa shopping centre on the street level lie half a dozen restaurants: a few Japanese places and two that present themselves as Italian. The one that’s most in sight is Bellini’s: the better part of the open space is taken by their terrace, split up between a section for eating and one for drinking only. When you go inside you pass in front of the counter on your way to the table, which triggers the usual loud Japanese greetings from the staff. The lights over the tables are low, but since the place is always very busy and tables are fairly close together this doesn’t give a sense of cosiness. The basket next to your table is meant to put your handbag or other small stuff in, given that there is limited space on the tables.

The food is average, but you can get a few different wines by the glass, which is useful if you’re on your own. I’ve had some of the pizzas and the some of the pasta, and while none of them were bad, they weren’t outstanding either.    [15 May 2004 09:28:43]
