Absolutely Fabulous Nothing left to be desired. Absolutely top-quality food, ambience and service at a fair price. Making reservations is recommended. Spend the whole evening eating & drinking in a very pleasant atmosphere. After 8 visits it is still a wonderful surprise. Excellent! [22 Jul 2002 05:17:30]

Treated like dirt May 2000 we visited "De Piekenier" in Oudeschans. We were a group of 20; that weekend we were taking part in a large Napoleonic bviouac and battle re-enactment. To kick off the event we would march 20 miles to the nearby Fortified town of Bourtange, in historic uniforms and equipment, and we were going to make camp that evening in the countryside. The starting point would be the village Oudeschans. We gathered there, and decided to enjoy one last non-historic beverage before the long march to the event. We are used to get the odd looks when people see us, we are used to that. However, the people at "De Piekenier", who had heard of us from news in the local press, decided that looking 'funny' was a reason to treat us like dirt. We ordered several drinks, and we paid for everything. Nevertheless, a man, -presumably the owner,- thought it was necessary to make comments on our dress and about our hobby (living history), and to make fun of us. In all, we felt quite humiliated and offended. We are certain never to visit this place ever again. [25 Mar 2003 11:29:54]

A very pleasant surprise In search of a good restaurant, we tried this restaurant in the nice small village Oudeschans. We were received very personally. We decided to have the surprise menu. And what a surprise it was!! We had an excellent diner in a very pleasant ambiance. We would certainly recommend this restaurant.
Please note that after 2000 there was a change of ownership (we already discovered this on Dutch review sites and it was confirmed by the current owners). The review of Marc Schaftenaar doesn't reflect the current situation! [07 May 2004 16:28:08]
