Great place for a decently priced good meal in a pleasent ambiance What a great idea to put a restaurant in this building. The old distillery stuff on the walls, the construction itself, the open kitchen/bar and dark wooden tables and chairs create a nice ambiance. The dimm light is easy on the eyes and is really helpful for a romatic dinner. Smells from the kitchen fill the air and makes your mouth water.
The writing's on the wall...... the menu is written on slates above the bar, a wine list hangs above the door. But of course, you also get a 'normal' menu. Shaped like a bottle (fles) and handwritten.
I started off with a Chilean red wine and ordered the Champignons Dordonge as appetizer. It was perfect. The right amount (not overdone), the right heat on a plate that fitted the restaurant's ambiance. It tasted very good.
Main course was a "Spies de Fles", a stick of roasted meat, onions and green peppers. Served with a salad, two potatoes with garlick sauce and three sauces for the meat. Again, excellent. The flesh was so soft, tender and tasteful. No nasty hard bits, nothing burned, and not heated so long that the fluids were lost. Great taste and more than enough. The potatoes and salad were good too.
The people I had the pleasure dining with also were also very satisfied with their dishes (tomato and onion soup, Wagyu beef). Also on the menu are several steaks, quiches for vegetarians, spare-ribs fish and several other dishes. You could also get snails as appetizer, several soups and fish dishes.
I finished my evening with a delicious glass of Chabasse cognac. They serve several cognac's, whiskey's, icecream, large range of coffee's with liquors and tea.
The service was excellent, the only flaw that it took some time before we got the chance to order the second round of drinks. Minor problems were promptly and satisfyingly dealt with by the waitress. No rushing, altough she was sooooooo busy. :-) Music was in the background where it belongs, sixties style. Guest noise was limited to tables, so no problem with the conversations.
We parked on the Vale Hen, behind the restaurant. Free after 18.00 except thursday. They are popular. Several people could not get a table, some even came back later! When there's only the two of you, you might have more luck. So make a reservation.
Price is ok! [26 Sep 2002 07:11:15]
