Superb Mix of Dutch and French cuisine
'de Ziende' is both a lovely hotel and superb restaurant. The building is on an inlet of the Nieuwkoop Plassen with a fantastic view and a delightful terrace for pre-dinner drink or lunch [it is probably a bit buggy for an evening meal]. The menu is superb with local specialities eel and Zander or pike-perch [Snookbass] as well as several other fish and some superb meat dishes. Both the eel and zander come from the adjacent lake, lamb comes from England, the rib-eye from Eire and the Red Perch from Iceland.

I started with smoked eel - which the owner smokes in his own smokehouse viewable from the restaurant window - which was superb and was then torn between fried eel or snookbass. I chose the eel but should probably have chosen the other way as 2 eel dishes was probably too much for one meal. The snookbass looked and smelt superb.

My wife had French onion soup [soup-erb] and the ribeye steak which was mouthwatering.

Desserts were good [although I'm not a dessert person] and the coffee was excellent.

Breakfast was good as well, though the coffee wasn't as good as in the evening.    [24 Jun 2002 09:53:49]
