Ex-pat hangout in the heart of Bucharest
Sydney Bar & Grill is the hot spot, sure enough! It's located on Piata Victoriei, a short walk from the embassies and mansions on Sos. Kisseleff (including the residence of the US ambassador), Muzeul Taranului (Peasant Museum), Muzeul Satului (Village Museum), and Parcul Herastrau. Everyone's got a cell phone and smoking imported cigarettes. By 9pm it's standing room only, and there are dozens of expensive cars and SUVs parked on the curb (that's right -- in Romania they park on the sidewalks). Definitely the place to be seen if you've got the $$$ (this place is priced *way* out of reach of most locals). The wait staff speak reasonably good English and are mostly well-intentioned. If you want good food and drinks, however, you might want to go elsewhere. Let's just say that the quality of both have gone downhill since our prior visits, when we really enjoyed this place. The menu (changed since last year, and no longer offering very much for vegetarians) is more hype than substance. The drinks menu is fun to read, but the small glass arrives with half a drink and the rest whipped cream. So go for the people-watching (and to be watched :), but don't expect to get more from the food and drink than to be overcharged for it.    [06 Jan 2000 20:11:07]
