Going downhill I fear Great place for a game of pool and a beer, non-intimidating atmosphere but not so raw that you're getting accosted by whores and low-life.
They used to have a great deal going with a juicy steak, baked potato and glass of wine or beer for a couple hundred baht. Sadly it's not available anymore. I tried one of the steaks anyway, most of which cost a lot more than the old deal not including beer, and I was disappointed. When you pay these prices you expect something special but the cut of meat I received was of a quality you'd expect to find in any dark and dingy neighbourhood supermarket and it was inexpertly cooked. I had to struggle with it, not because of the size.
You don't expect much from the service in these places. In fact having plates slammed down and having to holler for anything at all could be considered part of the charm in a place like this but I think they could work on a few things. They don't seem keen on hiring Chiang Mai locals - the result is a 'refugee camp' atmosphere (actualy on some shifts Mae Sa Elephant Camp comes to mind) with attendant lack of harmony you'd expect from staff with a more comfortable connection to the city. What I'm saying is there often seems to be a fractious atmosphere among the staff. I recall there being a friendly owner here before but I suspect he's on extended leave as I write this.
Hopefully it's one of the few places that still knows how to do a decent burger. I haven't got chance to try lately. Free wifi is a plus. Note you might have to get the AP reset. [25 Jul 2007 03:07:45]
