Avoid Steamers in Ketchikan My wife and I were recently in Ketchikan on a cruise with Norwegian Dream and decided after a shore excursion to have dinner at Steamers.
It was pleasant enough and we were seated quickly. The rest of our experience at Steamers went down hill in a hurry.
We ordered a drink, an appetizer, and the Alaskan king crab legs. It took a while for the drinks to appear. We sipped our drinks for a while and ate a piece of bread, which tasted like stale cardboard - it was disgusting, then our dinner salads arrived. We thought this was odd as most appetizers are served before the salads. We asked our waiter what happened to our appetizers and he said, "We got slammed, and I am sorry". We told him to forget the appetizers and take them off our bill.
After a long wait, our king crab legs were served. Upon picking them up to crack them open, both crab leg dinners were stone cold. One cold dinner, might have been due to being busy, but two is incompetence at all levels.
We called our waiter over and told him they were cold. He said he would get them warmed up, but our patience at Steamers had been tested enough. We told him to give us the check for our drinks and we were out of here.
The head waitress or owner (not sure which) came over to offer apologies, but what can be said when the most expensive item on the menu is not worth eating. In addition, the dinner was to be for one pound of crab legs. Each plate had only two legs and felt like a half-pound of crab legs at best. We felt really cheated.
Overall, the service was lousy, bread was disgusting, and the dinners were stone cold.
It was a great relief that the cruise ship dining rooms were still open where we got a really good meal. [25 Jul 2005 12:36:13]
