Havana on Sunset The "most ambitious Cuban menu" in town offers such best bets as vaca frita, fufu de platano (garlicky mush of pureed green plantains) and chicken fricassee (with an especially thick and toothsome tomato sauce).
--Charles Perry (Los Angeles Times) http://www.chowhound.com/reviews/losangeles/2-14-99.html Havana on Sunset, located in the Metropolitan Hotel, may be the fanciest Cuban restaurant in Hollywood, with dim mood lighting, acres of thatch, a dramatic bar, and scratchy charanga records booming in the background. Be thrown back in time during the weekends when things get hot with some of LA's hottest salsa bands. To go with the excellent daiquiris and famour Mojito cocktails, you can get crusty fried meat empanadas oozing scarlet oil; musky, crisp salt-cod fritters; and crunchy, salty little disks of deep-fried green plantains called tostones. I like the leg of pork, oozing slabs of soft flesh thoroughly saturated with garlic and citrus, and the vaca frita - oily, Cuban-style fajitas, fried hard with onions, peppers and a healthy slug of soy - is fine. Here, too, is what may be the best arroz con pollo in town, complexly alcoholic, as if three or four different kinds of wine had been used in the dish. Dinners come with salad or a small bowl of the restaurant's excellent chicken soup, shot through with more exotic vegetables than you can shake a malanga root at.

Far from Upscale Band did not play salsa music and it was a Saturday night. Worst service ever, food just ok La Cubana in Glendale is by far the best!! Had a surprise b-day party on 9/25/04 that was an absolute disaster and to top it off food was ordered and paid for in advance!! Guests went ignored and came all the way from Rancho Cucamonga! Service was lousy had to ask for water, silverware and even a knife to cut the birthday cake. Charged for items not served and not served items that were paid for. Everthing promised was not provided. Will never go back [05 Oct 2004 13:49:15]
