Sausage & sauerkraut
Fabulous. Not expensive. Homemade goodies. Should be more places like this.    [09 Jan 2005 23:32:11]

Great food but untasteful service.
The food is awesome, everything on the menu is delicious. The service leaves a lot to be desired. They might have a few different waiters but on my visits the waiter was too busy chatting and doing nothing. Did not keep the water glasses full, did not ask how the food is, did not ask if our table needed something. Everytime I needed service, I had to flag him down.
When new guests came in, they were not promptly seated/greeted, nor were the tables ready for seating- it would have taken two minutes to set the tables ahead of time, instead the people were left waiting. It shouldn't be too hard to keep track of less than 12 tables. The staff needs to realize that it is our money that feeds them, they need to pay more attention to service.
Too bad the service sucks, the food is great though.    [02 Oct 2005 00:05:29]

A hidden jewel
This cafe is a little piece of Poland tucked into a strip mall in Walnut Creek. It smells good when you walk in (all that Polish food), sounds good (staff speaking quietly to each other in Polish), Chopin playing in the background, and looks good in a foreign kind of a way (appliances, wall hangings and tapestries, countertops and such all obviously not from around here). It is like going to your Polish grandma's in the city for dinner, only I'm not Polish, and never been to Poland. Everything is spotlessly clean, fresh, lots of attention to small details. There is an obvious quiet national pride here; these people want you to experience a bit of their culture.

Polish food is not cuisine; it is FOOD. Good food! Sticks in your belly, makes you feel like you can go out and shovel snow all day. I had cucumber salad, Goulash for the main course and rum cake with tea for dessert. I was surprised that you could make a cucumber that interesting. Very delicate flavors. Goulash is like a pot roast in spicy mushroom gravy, with little potato dumplings and a side of sauerkraut seasoned with dill and wild onions. If you were stuck on an iceberg and got nothing but a plate of goulash once a week, you would survive for months, maybe years. The flavors are outstanding, preparation and presentation perfect, understated yet elegant.

Service was first rate; I don't know what these previous reviews are referencing. Maybe they changed the wait staff or gave them some remedial training.

The sum of the whole is greater than the parts. Don't go in there thinking "OK, 1 to 10 scale, let's have some of your food and service, see how you do. Gotta make the 7 p.m. movie" This place creeps up on you. Bring your passport and a friend, linger over the food, enjoy the coversation and soak up the atmosphere of the place. It's like a mini-vacation plus you eat something new and interesting. Save the movie for some other night when you're back in the states.

Oh yeah. Have a Polish beer to wash down the Goulash. Really, even the beer is good, and it tastes distinctly... Polish.

Who'da thunk Polish food was that good?    [09 Mar 2006 11:02:44]

My Favorite Local Restaurant
The food is consistently great. I have tried almost everything on the menu but always go back to the Kutlet (schnitzel). I enjoy the Polish beer, too. I have never had a problem with the service and have always found the staff courteous and friendly. There is always a nice, creative touch with the garnishes. The atmosphere transports you to a small town in Poland. It is a true gem.    [12 Jul 2006 17:06:02]

New Favorite
Everything was so delicious. I had pickle soup (you have to try this--I know it sound weird) and pierogi w/ half potato and cheese, half mushroom and sauerkraut. We asked about the wine choices and the waiter broke out an impromtu wine tasting. They had just gotten in some new wines and wanted our opinion. The waiter recommended the blintz for dessert--so amazing! Stuffed with sweet cream cheese and generously drizzled with fresh raspberry sauce. There was only one waiter on a Friday night but he managed to keep everyone in the place happy. He chatted with us about some of the history of the restaurant and dishes. He may not have been waiting with the water pitcher like a hawk but no one in the restaurant seemed to care. Very nice. Please try this place out!    [28 Oct 2006 11:38:22]

Wonderful Restaurant
This place was great. I was there with a large family on a busy night. Our table ordered hunters stew, pierogi, kielbasa, and stuffed cabbage. The food came in large portions and was so tasty. The Polish beer was very good too. The service was excellent, I believe the other reviewer to be wrong. The place was packed and our server looked like the only one there. He did an awesome job in making us feel welcome, kept our glasses full, and was very sweet and courteous throughout our entire meal. We will definitely be returning to this place in the near future.    [18 Feb 2007 13:45:09]
