Monte Cristo lovers unite! This is Carrows and so I won't comment on the prime rib, pasta liguini or fried chicken ( not bad, actually) but surprisingly the monte Cristo sandwich is a winner. Though not on par with, say Astro Burgers (Silverlake) version, it is a tasty sandwich. A triple decker, Texas toast toting grilled club, Carrow's version has the extra feature of the venerable sandwich rolled in crushed corn flakes after the standard egg wash dip. Nice touch.
Filled with ample amounts of smoked turkey and ham, the sandwich is rich, almost to a fault. Raspberry jam is the standard side but the dish comes with ample amounts of powered sugar. Additionally, the sandwich is griddle-fried and not deep fried which make it a little bit lighter. If most Monte Cristos are gut-bombs this sandiwch is on a sliding scale. Carrow's version is a gut-grenade.
Still, it's a delicious version of the venerable sandwich. Perfect for sopping up those late night booze trips. [02 Jul 2004 03:33:04]
