Fawn Brook Fell Way Short My wife and I decided to dine at The Fawn Brook Inn for our 15th wedding anniversary. We had gotten engaged their 18 years ago.
We were disappointed with the service and the main courses. Our waiter never introduced himself, didn't mention any specials, didn't lead us into wine and appetizers and basically treated us like we were in a chain restaurant. The steak au pouvre was very stringy and warm, not hot and the lobster was overcooked. I was even more disappointed when our bill came and my choice of the house single malt scotch was $16.95!
When you go to a restaurant that has had a solid reputation and you get this kind of experience it makes us not want to ever go back. [23 Aug 2005 17:42:28]

Full Of itself This is a case of one becoming a legend in one's own mind.
We did get the photo opps but the meal was borderline.
The Cesar salad was instead a a set of green leaf covered in lemon juice. Extremely tart and my wife was unable to eat any of hers.
We ordered the venison which was coated in an overpowering bing cherry-wine sauce that hid any taste of the wild game. I am not sure what cut of venison it was supposed to be but it was certainly not related to either loin section. It was very stringy and extremely hard to cut.
The only plus, it was cooked medium rare as it should have been.
As a long time hunter, chef and diner of venison, I would recommend they remove this selection from their menu. It was a crime to ruin a great natural taste by attempting to be artsy! Save it for the lamb.
I found the entire meal to be a fantasy of an upscale experience but, in fact, is small town wishfulness.
The service was mediocre and I had to request everything rather than being suggested by the wait-staff.
My wife and i did get some excellent hummer photos but my recommendation would be to skip the meal an just sit outside and enjoy the hummers.
The huge volume of tiny birds is something very few will ever get to see in their lifetime! [13 Aug 2006 13:10:05]

We Loved It!! We went to the Fawn Brook and had a great time. We had chauteu briand, it was the best I have ever had. On a previous visit, I had the roast duck, with that and I am speaking from first hand experience having eaten duck all over the world -- it was the best.
Once you get past the stock wine menu things do open up, ask for the reserve wine menu for a real treat. [27 Mar 2007 18:07:35]

Worth the ride! What a jewel of a discovery! A blizzardly night -- driving out of Estes Park up business rt 7 with a map in hand to this destination restaurant. Log cabin w/ fire going and hummingbirds in the dark feeding in front of the windows! (who knew?). Excellent 4 star food in a comfy atmosphere. Don't miss it. Reasonable prices, not cheap. Friendly service with the owner visiting table to table. Wonderful food with a German bend to it. Even in a snowstorm it was full -- the people at the next table drive up from Fort Collins on a regular basis. We're looking for any excuse to get back there! [12 Jul 2007 19:01:54]

What A Pleasant Surpise I just stumbled into this place, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. I won't say that it's the best I've ever had, but it's absolutely 5 star food and service. Other than the Sundy House in Delray, FL, I don't think that I've experienced a better atmosphere. As far as the menu, it's quite interesting and there's plenty from which to choose. They're pretty clear about how things are prepared, so I would tend to say that a guest would have no one to blame but themselves if they are surprised by what they get (see comment above about 'bing cherry-whine sauce', and, yes, that is a deliberate misspelling.) When spending this kind of money for a meal, one certainly expects to thoroughly enjoy themselves, but I'd say that most people who are used to fine dining will be able to navigate the menu, appreciate the few eccentricities that are present at the Fawn Brook, and have a wonderful overall experience here.
