Possibly the area's best Mexican restaurant This restaurant, located in a nondescript strip mall adjacent to a Wal-Mart Supercenter is possibly the best Mexican restaurant in the area.
Apparently the locals agree - it's not unusual to have a 15 minute wait on Friday and Saturday nights. If you don't want to wait, come early. While the restaurant isn't small by any means, it manages to fill up quick. The waiting area is very small and cramped, but there are benches outside the entrance as well.
Like any good Mexican restaurant, salsa and chips come to the table quickly after a party is seated. The salsa is a standard affiar, smooth and not too spicy.
Soft drinks and sweet tea are available and are served in big cups.
The restaurant has the typical Mexican fare: burritos, enchiladas, tacos, rellenos and the like, but also steaks and marinated chicken dishes. There are a few vegetarian offerings, too. The restaurant offers margaritas and beer, as well as authentic Mexican drinks like horchatas.
On a recent visit, I tried the enchiladas verde. The green chile sauce was tangy and slightly fruity, and complimented the chicken enchiladas well. If green chile isn't your thing, the enchiladas rancheras or yolandas are both more traditional and full of flavor.
Earlier I had tried the pork carnitas, which are cubes of pork, marinated and simmered with onions and other seasonings. The carnitas are served with flour tortillas, rice and beans. The pork was slightly dry, but still tasty and very tender. The rice and beans were unusually good - both had a slight crispness as if they'd been under the broiler for a moment. I could have made a meal on those alone.
So far, the burritos, tacos, flautas and chimichangas have not disappointed, either. Each are well prepared.
The portions are generous enough that, so far I haven't been able to try desserts, but they are offered for those with a sweet tooth.
The waitstaff doesn't speak perfect English, but they are usually energetic and attentive, sometimes even quite festive. The decor is typical of the inexpensive Mexican scene. Tables are cleared quickly and have always been clean.
(Follow up, 12/15/07: Mi Pueblo continues to serve good food along with friendly and efficient service. After having sampled many northcentral Mississippi Mexican restaurants, I can say that Mi Pueblo's chile rellenos are among the very best. Their fajitas, however, have been disappointing. On other visits, the various quesadillas have all received positive reviews from my dining companions.) [22 Apr 2007 02:00:34]
