Great Southern Food! Ajax has great Southern cuisine - the lunch menu is exceptional and the dinner menu offers a mix of "home style" favorites and ajax specialities.
One of the best restaraunts on the square hands down. [16 Mar 2004 18:08:19]

Down Home Cooking with a Gourmet Flair Ajax Diner brings a gourmet flair to down home southern cooking. One can't go wrong with their vegetable platters, as their veggies rank among some of the best I've ever had. The only criticisms that I've heard of their veggies harken back to age-old arguments over certain schools of southern cooking. For example, some like a little sugar in their whole leaf turnip greens, and some prefer a little vinegar in their chopped turnip greens. With a friendly staff that remembers your name, has fun at work, and is always polite and prompt (if you are), you can't fault the service. [04 May 2004 17:28:25]

Perfect Southern Restaurant Ajax epitomizes what good a good southern restaurant should be. Great hospitable service, a wonderful environment, and excellent food. Every time a "yankee" comes to Oxford I reccomend they get a Southern orientation at Ajax. [27 Feb 2005 16:47:10]

Ajax is the Greatest The Ajax is a superb cafe, just run-down enough in decor to provide a great downhome feeling to go with the wonderful cooking. Cuisine is pure southern and widely varied in vegetable offerings. The fresh red tomato slices with mayonnaise in late summer can't be beat. Portions are generous with the drinks as well as the food. World's best martinis! [06 May 2007 16:40:43]

Ajax mini-review Ajax serves up creative and tasty Southern-style cooking on the beautiful Oxford courthouse square.
The décor is quirky yet subtle, the waitstaff attentive and the prices decent.
On this, my first visit, I chose the chicken and dumplins with mac & cheese and turnip greens. The mac & cheese and dumplings were excellent. The turnip greens were the style I was used to; these featured plenty of diced turnips and an almost sweet juice. The more I ate, the more I came to appreciate this style, although I still prefer the vinegar kind.
One of my two dining companions chose the meatloaf, with squash cassarole and red beans & rice. He gave thumbs up to each, noting the meatloaf as a standout item.
The other person had country fried steak with brown gravy, mashed potatoes with brown gravy and black-eyed peas. She also enjoyed everything, but complained of the saltiness of the brown gravy. The steak was tender with a crunchy exterior, the potatoes tasted homemade and the black-eyed peas were tender and meaty flavored.
The sweet tea was good but not great, but refills were always prompt. Each plate was served with a slice of jalapeño cornbread, which was deliciously crumbly, with a nice hint of heat.
Overall, this was a good first impression. For the price, the portions were generous. Perhaps the only bad thing was actually finding this place and parking. At night it was initially overlooked; a casual stroll around the square led to us discovering its location. [15 Dec 2007 01:44:29]

Awsome, must visit again I was down in Oxford for a week, and I asked a local coworker a place for Cajun food, he recommended Ajax. Um ok yea I walked by that place the other night, ok that's Friday's dinner. Well, it was busy bout 7pm. I sat at the bar, was served quick, no jambalaya but wow did they have a jamacian jerk pork steak, with spicy mustard greens served cold, sweet potato casserole, black eyed peas and good regional micro beers on tap. Can't wait to get back. [04 Mar 2008 21:16:31]
