Best Moussaka in Lower Manhattan
On a recent visit to Delphi Restaurant, on the corner of Reade Street and West Broadway in lower Manhattan, I struck by the lively atmosphere and clean, wood-paneled decor. The place well-lit without being harsh and diners can opt to sit along the windows lining West Broadway, and people-watch the eclectic Manhattan lunchtime crowd. The service at Delphi’s is friendly and fast, but not rushed, and our waiter presented the daily specials in a melodious Greek accent. There’s always a fresh fish choice at Delphi’s, and it can be prepared in several different ways, including “Aegean Style.” Most meals at Delphi’s is accompanied by a Greek salad and warm pita bread. The salad always fresh, a simple affair elevated by a light dressing and excellent feta cheese. The menu contains traditional Greek foods which includes several vegetarian selections and a hearty steak or two. I had the Moussaka, and this is where Delphi outdoes itself. Moussaka is a layered concoction of eggplant, a ground meat mixture and a creamy custard like topping. This dish is finished off by tomato sauce and grated cheese. The flavor combination is nothing short of miraculous. Delphi adds rice and very lightly cooked vegetables to the dish, making for a hearty and satisfying meal. On this visit my companions enjoyed soft-shelled crabs, Eggplant Aegean Style (a vegetarian preparation) and Pastitsio, a delicious, traditional baked pasta dish. All meals were pronounced excellent! The price is average for a downtown eatery, entrees are between $6.00 and $12.00 and include the salad and bread. best Greek food in NY
My family and I have been going to the Delphi Restaurant for more than 20 years. My sister had her wedding lunch there. The food is great, the staff is friendly, and the owner is very warm and inviting.

I lived in Greece for 6 months many years ago, and Delphi's offers the traditional Greek hospitality and good food in a casual setting.    [09 Apr 2004 10:40:29]
