Description

A Lower East Side institution, Yonah Schimmel's has been serving up knishes, both savory and sweet, and a few other traditional foods for years in an establishment that hasn't changed a lick. Both takeout and sit-down service are options. Don't know if it's actually kosher, but it's definitely Jewish.

Delicious Knishes
How many foodstuffs rhyme with delicious? Not too many. Yonah Schimmel's not only makes great, giant, piping hot knishes in a variety of flavors (regular potato, mushroom, onion, and a few fruit flavors), but is also an amazing throwback to another era. Around the corner from Katz's, it too provides an interesting counterpoint to the current era's crop of clubs and soulless takeout joints. This place has got ambiance bleeding out of the walls, though it is depression-era ambiance.    [13 Feb 2001 07:03:13]

Yummy!
I made my first trip to New York last week and stayed at the Howard Johnsons hotel next door. I loved Yonah's!! I ate there every morning! It was so New York. It was the mornings that were the best part of the trip! The days were filled with crazy rushing around from one place to another, but at least the morning were relaxing and yummy!
Thanks!    [04 Nov 2002 11:53:17]

Delicious Memories
I used to get Cherry, Pineapple & Blueberry Cheese Knishes with my father on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway as a kid. These great knishes bring back memories long since gone--though I don't remember the 'old' knishes being as big as Yonah's!
If you've never had a cheese knish, try one & you'll be hooked for life!    [29 Nov 2002 15:55:07]

Worth every penny!
On Valentine's Day we stopped in after a movie next door - what a delicious find! REAL knishes and Egg Creams for real New Yorkers! Not over-priced and mass-produced like the nearby "deli", either.    [18 Mar 2003 11:49:37]

Oh, Those Potato Knishes!
It's been thirty years since I first tasted a knish from Yonah Shimmels. I still crave the hot potato knish and look foreward to having one each time I come to New York.    [04 May 2003 20:18:17]

Cheese Knish City
The cheese knishes are huge and cheap. Make them cut them in two. They look like a burrito and are filled with cheese. Sort a reverse on Danish with about a spoonful of filling. I make trip into Queens late at night and stop at Yoneh Schimmels before taking the Holland Tunnel back to Maryland. The knishes freeze well and can be heated in a microwave so are great for breakfast over the next couple of weeks.    [11 Feb 2007 16:14:31]

This is the real NYC!!
My wife and I made our first trip to Yonah Shimmel's in the summer of 2006. We loved the real bagel's and knishes. Alex was also great. On a recent trip in May 2007 we tried H&H Bagels they were ok but nothing like Yonah's plus there was not the atmosphere. Visitin Yonah's is like stepping into a time machine. If you visit look for Alex and tell him his friends from Georgia sent you. You won't be disappointed.    [20 May 2007 18:16:01]
