'WHIRLWIND' KEPT MA-MAW'S HOPPING - The Columbus Dispatch, Matt Tullis, 27 October 2007; BALTIMORE, Ohio -- A somber hush fell over Ma-Maw's Diner as the lunch rush ended Wednesday afternoon. Instead of arguments about politics with owner Mary Smith, the only sounds were those of clinking coffee cups destined for the dishwasher. A waitress, Barb Baker, flitted quietly from table to table with meals and, in a few cases, the news that nobody wanted to hear. Smith was last inside Ma-Maw's (the name her grandchildren called her) on Oct. 1: She hadn't been feeling well, so, after dropping off supplies and whipping up the day's special, she left for a doctor visit in hopes of learning what was wrong. She ended up in the hospital, where she found out she had leukemia. She fought the disease the way she fought other obstacles in life but lost the battle all too quickly. - suggest change
