Fantastic food, great service
You are in for a treat at the Alexander House in Oxford, Ohio. The ambiance is the first thing that greets you - quiet rooms, spacious place settings, a charming jumble of furnishings set the stage for a relaxing meal. The waitstaff is ever attentive without hovering - and is very knowledgeable about the food preparation as well as the wine list. My husband and I both opted for steak - and were treated to the best steak we've ever had. The meal started out with a very interesting salad of field greens complete with apples, nuts, and dried cranberries. It was complemented by a fantastic champagne vinagrette. My husband opted for a cup of soup - that night, potato bacon, and it was delicious. The steak was accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes, and grilled vegetables. Tender, juicy, flavorful - it was the best! The meal was finished with the creme brulee special - and some great coffee. The meal was paced great - a talent truly lost these days.. We never felt hurried or rushed.    [27 Jan 2003 14:22:26]

Perfect Food, but...........
This past weekend was graduation at Miami University in Oxford and we took our family (8 of us) to eat dinner at the Alexander House. The ambiance was wonderful and the meal was superb! We all had something different to eat and all the food was excellent.
The complaint that I have came at the end of our meal.
After handing our check to us, we were asked if we would take our coffee and dessert to the bar, because other people were waiting for our table. We said "no" and that we would be done in a few minutes. He then came back again and asked if there was a problem splitting up the check. (He had asked that because we had not promptly handed him the credit card!) That was very rude and was an insult to us! These people were "OUR GUESTS"! After spending $400 in a restaurant, I would think we would be able to at least sit there and drink our coffee and finish our dessert without being rushed and pushed out of our chairs! I think Alexander House needs to start thinking more about their customers and stop thinking about how much money they can make in one evening! They ruined a perfect evening!    [06 May 2003 09:23:09]

Great Food
I recently graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and took my family to the Alexander House for dinner following commencement. The food was awesome; I really enjoyed the filet with port wine reduction. Like all restaurants on graduation weekend in Oxford, the place was packed. Towards the end of the meal we were asked to take our drinks to the bar to free up the table, but it wasn't an unreasonable request; I'd eaten at the Alexander House before and the pace was entirely leisurely, but with graduation, the population of Oxford doubles and if they had been running with the same pace, I'm sure they wouldn't have been able to accomodate all the requests for reservations. (By the way, make yours early for grad weekend- they book up several months ahead of time.)Once we were in the bar, the bartender was all too happy to get us anything we needed. Far and away the best food in Oxford. I already know where I'm eating when I come back for class reunions and such.    [23 Jul 2003 13:58:31]

ok food
This would be my second choice of place to eat in Oxford. I have been here 3 times the service left much to be desired, staff was young, didn't know what they were serving, and my salad was wilted, not to mention my steak over cooked. I mentioned it to the waiter, he informed me that's what I ordered. Not professional, definitely not going back, let alone the bar up stairs was way over priced; we're not in NYC.    [15 Sep 2007 19:13:39]

Absolutely Atrocious Behavior by Owner
I went to A-list with my girlfriend and got some appetizers and some drinks. I attempted to pay for my appetizers with MUBucks which the owner Chris had personally done for me before. This time he must have been having a bad day or something when I requested to cash out. He verbally assaulted me and even stepped towards me in an aggressive manner. He at first denied ever having doing it before, before he retracted that and shouted at me that he did it a year before and they no longer do it. He looked at me with an extreme look of contempt and continued to verbally accost me in a threatening matter in front of his staff and other patrons. I have never experienced such horrible treatment in my life and was actually at times scared for my personal safety. Absolutely atrocious behavior!    [22 Sep 2007 18:05:14]

Amazing!
It's wonderful to have such a progressive and upscale restaurant/bar in a College town! The upstairs A-List bar has amazing decor and ambiance. The food downstairs is fantastic and ever changing. The owners are great, hospital and care a great deal about their customers. If this "Chris" pretend owner that MiamiKidJB made up exists he sure sounds scaaaaaary. Is he seven feet tall with a mohawk and biker tattoos? I hope this fake Chris owner doesn't scare me when I'm eating at the Alexander house! AAAAHHH! There he is! Ruuuuun!!!!    [19 Jun 2008 15:16:13]
