Food I usually always get a Grand Bit till after surgery and now I get the Alfie. On the norm, I am not a fish eater, I like shrimp and only usually with my homemade tartar sauce. But I love Alfie's fish and they have the best tartar sauce. The flavor is always superb. The texture is always crunchy and hot. I don't know where they find the friendly workers that they have. I have never once been treated rudely and I always feel welcomed.
Ambiance The restaurant is always clean. I do feel a distinctive style or theme would be nice. The decor is kinda ancient. But, it doesn't keep me from appearing weekly to get delicious food and friendly service. I feel the color brown is drab and not so friendly. Maybe soften the brown with a bamboo color and remove the decopaged pictures and replace them with prettier pictures of seashores, palm trees, boats and etc. The bathrooms are always clean and smell nice.    [27 May 2003 16:38:58]

Prices are good, the food is good and it's a clean place. A little greasy, but battered catfish and french fries are supposed to be greasy.    [17 May 2004 20:58:17]

Back to my childhood.
This isn't so much of just a food review, but a "life experience" one.
Back when I lived in San Antonio from about 1968 till 1973, (I was then 8 until 13 years old, born in 1960), we had an Alfie's there. Then we left and I have always rmembered that place. The fish seemed really good and I liked the place. It always seemed just a kind of mystical dream to me. Then, recently I moved to Alvin Texas with my sister for various and ill-begotten reasons, and I looked up Alfies as I was going to travel t San Antonio soon. I don't think it's there anymore, but wouldn't you know, one of the two left is right down the road from Alvin in Texas City, TX.
It was wonderful, the fish with the little batter shavings in the bowl was a reminder of why I liked it there when young, and I totally forgot about the English theme which was the basis of the whole place. ("Alfie"?, get it? I wonder now if it was inspired by the movie of the same name in any way.) There were still those wall hangings of the boards with the maps of Great Britain on them, darkened with age, of course.
It was wonderful. Like I was right back in my childhood for a second.    [29 Jan 2006 08:54:14]
