The chicken fried steak was of the best we've had in a long time. Very tender steak, cut with a fork, seasoned well, taste like steak not cajun something, batter very light but covered good. Sweet potato was delicious, as was fried okra. Cafe very welcoming as were wait staff. Had a great meal with lots of laughs with staff. [30 Aug 2004 13:39:05]

WOW ! What a treat! I gravitated to this restaurant at the suggestion of a long term resident after I expressed great disappointment with my previous preferrred restaurant choice for Chicken Fried Steak. I am from New Orleans where chicken fried steak simply isn't on the menus so I eagerly look forward to it when I am here. Well, true to what he told me the Chicken Fried Steak was tender, hot, juicy and I could cut it with a fork. In a word it was incredible! The side dishes are also uniformly excellent. I have been to Mel's several times since and the food quality remains outstanding. When I first started going to Mel's the restaurant's reputation had not yet begun to grow. As Mel's began to attract more customers the wait grew longer and finally they transformed the outdoor seating area into a closed in dining room (helps with the bugs in summer and chlly temperatures in winter) I never order anything but Chicken Fried Steak there but I have tasted my dining companions other entrees and all the food served there is uniformly good. The ambiance I would describe as hole in the wall early closed in garage but the place is clean and I am not going there to be charmed by the ambiance, although I have had some of my best eating experiences in this type of place. All I can say is if you like Chicken Fried Steak this is THE place in Tomball. I recommend going early 4:30PM (skip lunch)for dinner to avoid lines and waiting. Also if you get the large Chicken Fried Steak expect to take some of it home. [28 Nov 2004 10:38:30]

Great CFS Mel's Country Cafe in Tomball has the greatest chicken-fried steak around. The mashed potatoes & green beans are also to die for. The catfish is also magnificient. If I lived in Tomball I would probably weigh 300#. lol The folks are always nice and polite and even tho there's usually a wait on the weekends, it is well worth the time...! [21 Mar 2005 16:47:48]

Awesome! I've lived in Tomball all my 22 years and this restaurant is one of the best around! By looking at the outside you would think the food wouldn't be all that great but "don't judge a book by its cover." I would recomend this place to anyone! [29 Jun 2005 17:57:39]

A Country Prize Mel's is one of the best country cooking, low priced joints anywhere, and has unique character. At least one country music headliner eats there regularly.
The ambiance is "special" in a country sort of way. You are well looked after, but comparing it to a restaurant, well it is a country cafe not a restaurant.
Never had anything worse than pretty good over 10 years. Big portions, great country cooking, Very Tasty.
The signature MegaMelBurger is for the mad - 1 1/2 pounds of beef, 1 pound of bacon, 1/2 pound of cheese, plus lettuce/tomato/etc. The list of those who ate one and how long it took are on the honor roll - record 8 minutes I believe (would you want to know that person?) [01 Jan 2006 12:25:35]

Fast home cooked meals If you like good Southern soul food then you should enjoy Mel's cafe. This is the place for those days when you just want a greasy hamburger or something fried. It's great food! [10 Feb 2007 15:07:21]
