Excellent restaurant When Pomme, a French restaurant, opened its doors, we weren't sure that it'd stay open for long, since Gordonsville isn't necessarily a destination town. However, Pomme has become a big draw, and it's frequently filled to capacity, even on weeknights. The restaurant is situated in the center of town in one of the historic buildings. The food and service is excellent, although pricey, especially for dinner; for lunch the prices are more reasonable. Since it was my birthday, they made a special cake not on the menu. The only thing I didn't like was the white asparagus appetizer - but then, I had never had white asparagus before. Excellent place to go to for special occasions or to splurge "just because". Keep it a secret! My wife and I are on a perpetual search for fine dining. Imagine our surprise when we found one of if not the best cuisine anywhere in Gordonsville, VA. We have dined at fine restaurants here and in Europe (including Paris) and have never had a better meal. Reservations are becoming harder to come by so don't tell anyone! [09 Feb 2007 09:03:04]

Incroyable! My husband and I ate lunch at Pomme recently and were taken by the various flavors and textures of the foods. The rice was particularly singular - within it were tiny pieces of pasta. This is a unique culinary experience, unmatched by very few restaurants. It compares totally with our favorite restaurant in Quebec City. Anyone who dines at Pomme is in for an unforgettable treat. The after-dinner coffee was infused with a nutty flavor reminiscent of those of Paris cafes. [09 Jun 2007 13:15:08]

Best in Virginia Superb. Best in Virginia, though I have never been to the Inn at Little Washington. Snails and mushrooms with a hint of Pernod were unique. Duck sauteed with apples, Pernod, grapefruit, and cream was perfectly cooked and outstanding.
Highly recommend, though would not want to drive back to Richmond after dinner. [17 Jun 2007 16:35:11]

Hurrah for Pomme! We were in the Orange/Montpelier/Barboursville area and went to Pomme on a vague recommendation from a fellow foodie. We were so delighted - we will return again and again to this little spot of Provence in mid-Virginia. Food prepared as only a really French chef would - or could! The surprise factors are the decor and "Frenchiness" in a very real and historic area of down home USA. Great stuff, Pomme - keep it up! [08 Aug 2007 18:29:32]

A few missteps After a superb lunch last Fall we made a special trip for dinner at Pomme.
There were some high notes but also things were off-key at times.
The worst was when one of our party of 4 was served the wrong meal. We told the runner about the mistake and the plate was removed. Our waiter returned with the wrong meal and argued that my brother-in-law had originally ordered something else then changed his mind. I was the one who changed my order and I was served what I should have been. We waited several minutes for the mistake to be corrected.
The salmon, veal, and lamb were all great. The sole, which another waiter told the neighboring table was the chef's speciality, was mushy and blah. The adjacent table was also told about several specials which we had not been informed of.
I wouldn't recommend the crepe dessert. [14 Oct 2007 08:39:15]

Good service? Le chef doit rester a la cuisine! This Thanksgiving I visited this little town in VA with my boyfriend and his parents. Mr. K (Dad) made reservations at Pomme and we showed up on time in a cold Saturday evening...
Everything went OK,I gotta tell thou that our waitress could barely understand us and we could barely hear her, there was more than one little misunderstanding, plus she couldn't remember who ordered what in a table of only 4! The restaurant and service were fine, nothing INCROYABLE je vais dire que c'etais bien... Until...we made a small comment to the waitress about the fruit on the dessert, it was frozen and honestly we didn't really care it was tasty anyways. BUT BUT, BUT somehow the big French chef (the owner I guess) appeared in our table to challenge our frozen-fruit statement. The situation was either quite funny or really annoying, imagine by having to deal with an stubborn chef that mainly told us that we were liars because there was no way the fruit could be frozen.
Where on earth have you seen an owner challenging that way a customer? I could have been a bit more understanding if it had come from a Parisian chef...but this arrogant guy from a small tiny town in the south of France with such a limited-menu restaurant didn't dare to be apologetic or empathic to his customers! FABULOUS FOOD ... but When ever we come to town from New Jersey, we try to go for lunch to Pomme because we love the food - it is exquisite. We have not been thrilled with the waiter we always seem to end up with ... I could cite episodes, but suffice it to say, Pomme could use a better wait staff. [28 Feb 2008 08:24:40]
